SUMMARY:Come Back to Play - Session 3: Improv Play
DESCRIPTION:About The Come Back to Play Series\n\nAs adult responsibilities and routines take over\, time for play is something many of us leave behind. Our goal is to experience play as children do: with curiosity\, connection\, freedom\, surprise\, and a sense of adventure. Play reduces stress\, fuels creativity and problem-solving\, strengthens social bonds\, and promotes happiness. You are never too old to create opportunities to bring play back into your life.\n\nOver the following five Wednesdays from 12:00–2:30 PM\, each facilitator will guide you in experiencing play through their unique modality. We look forward to sharing the joy of becoming like little children as we Come Back to Play together.\n\nThese free events are offered through White Horse Community Hub. Registration is not required (except for 9/2 Painting Play- See event page for registration details). Doors open at 12pm for 1 hour of light refreshments and time for connection\, and each workshop will begin at 1pm.\n\nSchedule:\n\nAugust 12 -- Introduction to Come Back To Play: A Weekly Series\n\nAugust 19 -- Child’s Play with Janet Taylor\n\nAugust 26 -- Improv Play with Mondy Carter\n\nSeptember 2 -- Pass The Painting with Alison Press\n\nSeptember 9 -- Piano and Drum Playshop with Daniel Barber\n\nSeptember 16 -- Play in Movement with Victor LaConti\n\nSee event pages for each date for more details.\n\nAbout the Event:\n\nImprov Play with Mondy Carter\n\nImprov games are a whole lot of fun but often for the wrong reasons. Our experience of threat comes from a perceived presence of risk. Some people would rather choose to jump out of an airplane than risk anything in front of a group. That is an intense feeling of threat. How we see ourselves and how others see us almost feels like a matter of life and death. Strangely\, this is what makes improv games fun. Like a roller coaster or a haunted house\, the simultaneous presence of threat and safety is what makes those experiences thrilling. This safe threat and risky safety makes improv joyful\, and even better\, it can reveal opportunities hidden within risk. \n\nNo one handed you a script with stage directions this morning. You've improvised your whole life. It's a human trait. Learning the games and techniques of improvisation is really useful for promoting joy\, emotional release and discovering opportunities waiting to be appreciated.\n\nThis 90 minute improv workshop will begin with what you already know and go from there. You might have heard of the improv adage: "Yes and...". This phrase encourages accepting and building from the present moment. These games will start from that principle and build from there. This will be a fun time that shows you can handle uncertainty\, that creativity can emerge from constraints\, and that some of the most beautiful and authentic moments come not from rigid planning but from responding authentically to what life presents.\n\nAbout the Facilitator:\n\nYour Guide: Mondy (Mun-dee) Carter has been a practicing Buddhist for over 30 years and an improvisor longer than that. He a certified Meditation Coach. He lives in Black Mountain with his wife Karen\, together they care for his parents who live with them.\n\nhttp://www.yes-om.com
